During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Kingdom of Bahrain underwent a remarkable transformation, emerging as a key economic and financial hub in the Gulf region. The discovery of oil fueled rapid economic growth, attracting thousands of expatriates from across the globe. As industries flourished, the nation’s social fabric became increasingly diverse, enriched by people of various cultural and religious backgrounds.
Amid this wave of immigration, Bahrain remained a land of religious tolerance and openness, offering a welcoming environment for communities of different faiths. Among the growing expatriate population, many Christians found a spiritual home, leading to an increased demand for places of worship. In response, several Christian churches were established. Pentecostal churches, in particular, flourished—offering vibrant worship, spiritual fellowship, and an unwavering faith in the promises of God.
Initially, believers from the Church of God (Full Gospel) in India attended various Pentecostal congregations in Bahrain. However, as their numbers steadily grew, so did the longing for a dedicated Church of God ministry. This spiritual burden was prayerfully communicated to the Kerala State Office of the Church of God (Full Gospel) in India, located in Mulakuzha, Kerala, India.
Recognizing this spiritual need, on July 31, 1984, Pastor V.C. Itty, then Kerala State Secretary, sent an official letter to the Church of God believers in Bahrain, granting formal approval for the establishment of a Church of God (Full Gospel) in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This decision was prayerfully sanctioned by the Kerala State Council of the Church of God, under the leadership of State Overseer Pastor M.V. Chacko. With this divine commissioning, a new chapter in the Christian history of Bahrain began to unfold.
After months of preparation, prayer, and perseverance, the Church of God (Full Gospel) in Bahrain was officially inaugurated on January 2, 1985, at the residence of Brother M.G. Varghese. The unity and support of the wider Christian community were instrumental in laying the foundation of this ministry.
The believers stood together in faith, breaking denominational barriers—just as the early church did in the first century. Their unity and commitment became a living testimony of God’s power and purpose. On this historic occasion, Pastor T.T. Joseph, Senior Pastor of IPC Bahrain, prayerfully inaugurated the first Church of God (Full Gospel) in Bahrain. Many members from his congregation also extended their wholehearted support to the fledgling church.
Several prominent pastors and church leaders offered their blessings and stood in solidarity with the mission, including:
Their encouragement, along with the dedication of the believers, paved the way for the Church of God (Full Gospel) in Bahrain to shine as a beacon of Pentecostal faith on this “Island of Pearls.”
On January 6, 1985, the church held its first official worship service. A congregation of 28 believers and 10 children gathered, lifting their hearts in worship and seeking the presence of God in this newly established house of prayer. It was a sacred and historic moment, marking the beginning of a divine mission destined to touch countless lives in the years to come.
Pastor Mathew Cherian was appointed as the church’s first pastor, entrusted with shepherding the congregation in faith and truth. Brother P.J. Varghese was elected as the first president, with Pastor Mathew Cherian serving as vice president. Brother C.P. Varghese was chosen as the first secretary, tasked with overseeing the church’s administration and organizational needs.
From these humble beginnings, the Church of God in Bahrain grew under the sovereign guidance of Almighty God. It became a sanctuary of worship, fellowship, and spiritual renewal—a place where lives were transformed, faith was strengthened, and hope was restored. Through trials and triumphs alike, God remained faithful, leading the church step by step, just as He had led His people throughout the ages.
The unwavering commitment of the early believers, combined with the support of the larger Christian community, helped establish a strong foundation for future generations. As the church continued to expand, it became a spiritual home for many, welcoming new members, strengthening faith, and spreading the Gospel in Bahrain.
What began with a small group of devoted believers has blossomed into a vibrant and thriving congregation—a living testimony to God’s grace, provision, and unwavering faithfulness. The Lord who has led His people thus far will surely guide them into the future, fulfilling His divine purpose through His church.
To God Be the Glory, Forever and Ever. Amen!
